There are many used motorcycles available on the market that have years and years of good riding left in them, but there are also a lot of models that are a bit beat up. That’s why it's always best to inspect a used motorcycle before you buy it. If you’re not confident in your ability to inspect a used motorcycle, this guide from the experts at Maxey’s Motorsports.

Outer Appearance

Start your inspection with a look at the used motorcycle’s exterior. Minor scratches and dings can usually be painted over, but they can tell you more about how well the used motorcycle has been treated. Namely, it can tell you how hard and how often the motorcycle has fallen. We also recommend checking the wheels to make sure that they are aligned. If a motorcycle has misaligned wheels, that’s a good sign that it has been in at least one crash.

Internal Components

Of course, wheels aren’t the only thing that can become misaligned. Inspect the used motorcycle’s interior, including the nuts, bolts, valves, brakes, rotors, drain plugs, injectors, carburetors, tires, chains, and throttle bodies. If any of these components appear misaligned or otherwise in poor condition, that’s an obvious sign of poor maintenance.

Basic Systems

Finally, take a look at the motorcycle’s basic systems. Check the fuel tank to make sure the fuel is free of discoloration or metal flakes. You should also check the condition of the coolant in the cooling system. Don’t forget to check the air filter and spark plug. These two components are very easy to replace, so them being in poor condition is a good indicator of poor overall maintenance.
