An incredibly underrated aspect of owning a motorcycle are the group rides. These rides are not only exhilarating but a ton of fun as you and your pals get to enjoy the very best of what the open road has to offer, together. If you’re looking to set up a group ride with your friends be sure to read over our helpful safety tips below before you hit the road.

Formation

You’ll also benefit from establishing a formation beforehand. When you ride in formation, you’re providing a safer and more efficient experience. Don’t forget that riding side-by-side is illegal in many states. The most effective formation consists of two alternating lines. You’ll ride in a line that is tapered and alternates from left to right. Assign certain roles based on skill level. The riders in the very front and back should be the most experienced in the group with excellent leadership skills. The leader of the group will need to set the pace so no one feels rushed and the rear rider should stick with anyone who falls behind. It’s also a good idea for the last rider to have a repair kit.

Hand Signals

In case you need to communicate with each other while riding, you should come up with some hand signals ahead of time. Everyone will know how to react to the hand signals in the event of a problem. There should be hand signals for identifying hazards, stopping, turning, and pulling over. Go over these prior to riding to make sure that all members of the group are familiar.
