How to Safely Ride a UTV with Your Dog

UTVs are incredible for work and recreation and you may find yourself wanting to bring your dog along for the ride. This can easily be done, but it’s important to do it safely for yourself and your pet. If you’re curious about bringing your dog along with you, continue reading for our top tips!

Safe Transportation

The biggest thing you need to consider if you decide to bring your dog with you on your UTV is how you will transport them. Ideally, you won’t want to leave your pet unsecured because this can cause major distractions or potentially unsafe situations. There are a few options you can use to determine what is best for you and your dog. 

First, you can utilize a vehicle harness to keep your pet in one place. You can find specific harnesses or seat belt attachments that attach to your dog’s collar or harness. This may not be the perfect solution for all dogs because they may still wiggle around or be able to disconnect the belt. 

Another option is to put a crate in the rear of your side by side. It will need to be tied down securely, especially if you’ll be traveling across any rough terrain. This can be a great solution, especially if your dog is already crate trained. It prevents your pet from being able to move around the vehicle, but they will still be comfortable. 

Whichever option works best for you, it’s absolutely critical that you spend time allowing your pup to adjust to being in the UTV. Start with short rides, introducing them to the different speeds, terrains, and safety equipment you’ve chosen to use. As you and your pet get comfortable riding together, you’ll want to take it slow so the experience is a rewarding one!

Packing Your UTV

When you pack your utility vehicle for a trip, your packing list may look a bit different if you’re bringing your dog. You’ll want to bring items that will keep your pet comfortable and safe, like a water bowl, water, treats, food, medications, and temperature-regulating dog clothing or cooling mats. Especially in warmer areas, you need to be diligent about keeping your dog cool in order to avoid serious issues like heat exhaustion.

Trip Preparation

Before you head out on an extended adventure or a long day of traveling in your UTV with your four-legged friend, you’ll want to make some preparations. First, you should consult your veterinarian to make sure your dog is in great health for the trip you’re planning. Then, once you have the go-ahead, you’ll need to plan rest stops, drinking stops, and ways to keep your dog relaxed and happy!
