City Life on a Scooter
When you live or work in a big city, you know that you’ll be able to more easily enjoy things that other people might have to go out of their way to see, like world-class art, high-quality food, and budding enterprises and established industry juggernauts standing side by side. You probably also know how impossible it is to try and get anywhere by car. While public transportation and walking can get you some places, there are faster options.
Getting a scooter/moped can help you navigate big-city traffic quickly and efficiently. Riding a moped does come with some risks, though. That’s why Maxey’s Motorsports has provided some tips for staying safe on the road. Check them out and then stop by our location in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for more tips from our staff. We also serve Tulsa and Edmond.
Ride Defensively
As a motorist, you’ll need to take defensive riding seriously. While all motorists need to navigate the roads cautiously, it can be particularly important for scooter riders. Accidents can be particularly problematic when there are fewer barriers to protect you. The most important of these tactics, of course, is simply paying attention. Being aware of your surroundings, the hazards and the escape routes, can mean the difference between evading an accident in time and a dangerous collision.
One thing you should look out for is escape routes. Try to have two is possible. It’s the easiest way to dodge a driver who’s cutting you off or other obstacle. Your escape might be beside you, or even in front or behind you.
If you spot a driver who’s driving suspiciously or overzealously, avoid them altogether. Give them plenty of space and avoid passing them if it means you could be putting yourself in harm’s way. Use the entire lane to avoid possible road hazards.
If you’re still learning how to ride and need a little help, check out riding classes in your area. Check out classes at Oklahoma State University, or any of the other basic courses near us, or find something closer to your home.
Spot Dangerous Conditions
It isn’t always a vehicle that’ll create a hazard for you. Sometimes the road itself can pose threats that can cause an accident or even just a stressful moment. Wet roads are a classic example of a situation in which you might lose traction. Slow down and give yourself more time to stop in order to avoid sliding. We also recommend avoiding areas where water may collect. Stick to the very center of the road, where you’ll find higher, drier ground.
Other common road hazards need to be approached with caution, like oil spills and wet leaves. One that’s particularly unique to cities in train tracks. Tracks can be low-traction areas, as well as being particularly rough on your scooter. If you don’t travel over them carefully, you can lose your balance and tip over in the middle of the road. Avoid them if possible, and if you can’t dodge the tracks, cross them at an angle to prevent your wheels from getting stuck.
Choose the Right Gear
One way you can protect yourself even further while riding your moped is to wear all the right gear when you’re on the road. This includes a helmet, preferably one that covers your whole face and not just the top of your head. Try to be fully covered, even on warm days, wearing durable clothes to protect your skin in the event of a fall. This should include sturdy shoes and even gloves. You’ll also want to consider bright, reflective clothing, or a vest and lights while you ride.
Taking the right precautions plays an important role in keeping you safe on the road, while also getting you where you need to go quickly and efficiently. But first, you’ll need the scooter to get you there. Stop by Maxey’s Motorsports and let one of our experienced staff give you the complete tour of available options.
