A Guide to Commuting Via Scooter
Of all the vehicles you could use to commute, one of the most economical and environmentally friendly choices is a scooter. Scooters save you money on gas, they’re easy to ride and they can be parked anywhere. Plus, you’ll enjoy your commute so much more! Commuting by scooter has become much more popular in recent years because of all the reasons above.
But you do have to follow some important safety practices while commuting by scooter to keep yourself and those around you safe. Maxey’s Motorsports is your OKC metro scooter dealer. Below, you’ll find a guide to commuting by scooter that should help you to stay safe and be a more responsible rider.
Be Strategic When Planning Your Route
Planning your route from home to work will help you to avoid the routes that would be too dangerous or even illegal to use when riding a scooter, such as most freeways and highways. However, you don’t have to plot your intended commuting route out by hand; you can make use of mapping apps and software instead.
Google Maps offers the ability to choose “avoid highways” when using their mapping service so that you can find a safe way to and from work that avoids those dangerous and busy roads.Make sure you avoid the bicycle routes, though, since these will make use of bike paths and sidewalks that you can’t operate a scooter on legally.
Use Navigational Assistance While You Ride
When you ride your scooter, it’s going to be hard to use a GPS unit to hear your scooter’s navigational instructions. That’s why a Bluetooth® earpiece is so useful for scooter riders, because it will feed the directions right to your ear with no wind or traffic sound interference. You’ll just want to be sure that the earpiece fits comfortably in your helmet.
Also, try to program your navigational settings so that you have some advance warning of turns you need to make so that you can get in the right lane and be prepared to make the necessary maneuvers. Otherwise, you’ll be trying to find your way to the right-most lane in the middle of traffic and this is extremely risky.
Plan For Parking at Work
Your scooter will need to be safe while you’re at work so that it isn’t damaged or stolen, leaving you with no way home. Weather and theft are the two primary concerns here, although where you park needs to be determined so that you can avoid your scooter being in the path of cars that might bump it or knock it over.
Get some accessories to keep your scooter protected from theft, such as a disc-brake lock and a chain lock. Any items that you store on your scooter, such as your helmet or emergency gear, will also need to be secured.
A waterproof cover will protect your scooter from the elements, including rain, hail, wind and sun. The cover should fold up snugly for easy storage on your scooter. You’ll also want to make sure that the cover securely fastens into place so that it isn’t easily dislodged or removed by a gust of wind.
