With the raining season just around the corner, you’ll soon be able to try out a different kind of ATVing experience: mudding. As the dirt trails get wet, some riding parks will allow you to plow through the sticky mud and wallow into the bogs. Some parks even specifically cater to this kind of riding, and those who have already been doing it will tell you it adds a new thrill to each adventure.

If you’re new, though, there are some things you’ll want to take care of first before you can get started. To help you out, Maxey’s Motorsports in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has provided a list of essential information you’ll need before you hit the trails. We’re happy to help all those from Tulsa and Edmond, so if you have more questions, or would like some trail recommendations, contact us today!

Proper Gear

Just the same as with dry ATVing, when you’re out mudding, you’ll need to put safety first. Even if you think you’ll fall into soft mud, you can’t really know if there are rocks or other debris hidden beneath the surface.

Of course, this means all the basics like a helmet, proper riding clothes, and sturdy riding boots. It might be worth making sure everything you’re wearing is waterproof. But there are a couple of additional pieces of safety gear you’ll want to consider wearing. This can include gloves, since mud can sometimes be cold, and protective eyewear. More so than usual, you’ll probably have mud and debris kicked up into your face and you need to be wearing a face shield or goggles to prevent things from getting in your eye.

Plus, during these unusual times, you’ll want to check with the riding park about health precautions you’ll need to take, like a mask when you’re near high-traffic areas. These rules can change from one park to the next, so make sure you check the park’s website or call ahead before heading out for a ride.

Snorkel Kits

You also need to take some steps to protect your ATV. Namely, the last thing you want is for water and mud to get in the engine through the exhaust pipe. At times, you’ll be in mud so deep that a normal pipe could be entirely submerged. That’s why you’ll need to invest in a snorkel kit. This extends the part upward, high enough that no water should get into the engine. The kits often come with extended air intakes, extended CVT inlets, and outlet exhausts. If you’re not confident in installing it yourself, contact our service team for help.

Mud Tires

You’ll also find your standard four-wheeler tires also don’t hold up in the mud. They don’t have a good enough grip and you’ll likely get stuck too often to enjoy yourself. Ask your local tire supply how you can get mud tires for your quad. These tires are often bigger and come with paddle-like nobs to keep you afloat.

Mudguard Kits

Think of a mudguard kit as a mudflap for your ATV. If you like to go riding with a group, everyone behind you will be grateful if you install one of these kits, as it’ll help reduce spray and debris from getting kicked up behind you. It can even protect your ATV to a certain extent, so it’s a great investment for everyone.

After you’ve taken the right steps to prepare yourself for mudding season, you’ll be ready to start looking for the perfect set of mudding trails to get your feet wet. Or in this case, dirty.
