The all-terrain vehicle (ATV, also known as a four-wheeler) is an extremely useful powersports machine that’s become quite popular since its advent during the latter part of the 20th century. ATV uses are varied between sport, hunting, recreation and utility riding. Your typical 4-wheeler comes with a wide variety of great features designed to make riding more useful, but you can always add more accessories as needed to improve its comfort and function.

Maxey's Motorsports in Oklahoma City is your Sooner State ATV dealer. Here are some of the accessories we recommend you install on your ATV to make it more useful for a broad array of applications.

Winch

You can use your ATV on really rugged terrain, as that’s what it’s designed for, but sometimes, you or another four-wheeler operator may become mired in mud or stuck in a ditch, despite your best efforts. Installing a winch on your ATV ensures that you can use them to haul other four-wheelers out of a tight spot, move fallen logs, pull freshly-caught game out of a low area and even more. The winch should match up with your ATV’s power level so that you don’t drain the battery by pulling too much at once.

LED Lights

Four-wheelers are often used as hunting transport, which means that you’ll end up operating them before dawn or after dusk or in dim forest conditions. Improve your visibility in low light by installing some brilliant and efficient LED lights on your ATV. These will also be practical for trail-riding and other purposes, and they’re an extremely affordable addition.

Storage Options

Your average ATV may not have enough storage space for all the gear you need to carry. Fortunately, you can easily amend this with some additional storage options that allow you to haul around more cargo. You can fill up a cargo box with snacks, bottled water, a tool kit, an emergency radio, clothing, your phone, your first-aid kit and so forth. You’ll want to make sure that any option you choose doesn’t unbalance your four-wheeler or make it too heavy.

Tow Strap

Remember what we said above about getting stuck? Attaching a tow strap to your ATV means that a friend will more easily be able to haul your vehicle out of a difficult spot if you’re the one who gets mired. Tow straps can also help you with hauling other items, similar to a winch.

GPS

Don’t get lost in the woods without a way to figure out where you are and where you need to be! Your phone may not get a very good signal in all the remote places you like to ride, so installing a GPS unit on your ATV is a good move. Your GPS can keep track of where you’ve already been, too, and you can get a modest unit for under $100.

Emergency Supplies

Whether you carry your gear in a cargo box or in a backpack, it’s essential that you bring along some emergency supplies to make sure that you’re prepared for any scenario. A well-stocked first-aid kit with bandages, ointments and medications will help you address minor illnesses and injuries on the trail, while a tool repair kit will help you tune up your 4-wheeler out in the wilderness. You should also have an emergency radio that’s hand-cranked or battery-powered so that you can always contact help if you need it, and you’ll want to carry food and water to keep your energy up.
